My product is a new and unique concept. For many years people who have sight loss who use a long cane have been saying, “I wish I had a light on my cane to see where I am going.” The Long Cane Lighting System comes in two parts, an LED torch mounted on a directional bracket towards the top of the cane (below the handle) and an LED module near the bottom just above the tip. This will not only allow the user who has low vision to see ahead of their cane, it will also make them more visible to other pedestrians and road users. The torch also serves as a useful lighting aid to find those keys you have dropped!

Insight & Impact

I am registered blind and use a long cane to get around on a daily basis. My eye condition reduces my peripheral vision, particularly my lower vision that means I have to concentrate a long way ahead to see what is around me. I also cannot see at all in the dark. Being a cane user I am always astounded by the number of people who don’t see me, even with a metre long reflective stick in front of me. My products will enable the cane user to see further ahead, find lost objects without having to use their free hand or a separate lighting system and also make them more visible to others. These products may also enable somebody to further their independence by being able to go out after dark greatly increasing their social lives, mobility and self-reliance.

Great idea! Maybe the manufacturers of this one might expand their line by adding your second light? http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Path-lighter-Cane-Walking-Cane-Light_285987020.html The second light could be an LED at the tip, or a fibre optic just above. I have been researching canes for a different idea - I patented it last year.
